A quiet Lilliput reception room reconfigured around a framed harbour outlook, bespoke smoked-oak joinery and a restrained natural material palette.
The brief
In a coastal property, the view can easily become the only idea. The challenge here was to create a room with its own material presence while keeping the harbour outlook uninterrupted. The reception space needed storage, display, comfortable seating and a focal point without becoming busy or competing with the landscape.
Reframing the room
The plan organises furniture away from the glazing line, preserving a clear route along the windows and allowing the view to be experienced from several positions. A curved cream sofa softens the rectilinear architecture, while saddle-brown leather chairs add warmth and a more upright seat.
The fireplace is deliberately simple: pale stone, clean lines and enough visual mass to balance the joinery on the opposite wall. A low table and woven rug define the seating zone without interrupting the long sightline to the coast.
Bespoke joinery as architecture
The oak bookcase is more than furniture. Full-height divisions respond to the room's scale, while closed base units conceal everyday storage. Shelves are kept broad and lightly dressed so the grain and proportion remain visible.
Setting out joinery beside full-height glazing requires care. Floor tolerances, curtain zones, electrical outlets and the final shadow gaps all affect the result. The oak tone was selected to sit between the pale stone and darker leather rather than matching either one exactly.
Working with coastal light
Large areas of glass can produce glare and strong contrast. The pale ceiling and floor distribute light deeper into the room, while soft curtains filter the edge of the glazing without closing down the view. Artificial lighting is kept discreet and layered so the room remains calm after dark.
Material choices near the coast also demand attention to fixings, finishes and maintenance. Even inside, salt-laden air and solar exposure can influence hardware, glazing components and the long-term appearance of timber.
Coordination and completion
For Mendit, the build sequence would connect glazing, floor preparation, fireplace construction, electrical work, decoration and final joinery. Samples and junction details are agreed before manufacture, and finished surfaces are protected while remaining work completes.
The room feels quiet but not empty—an interior shaped to support the coastal setting rather than imitate it.
